Handling and transferring patients safely is a major concern due to the risk of injury to both patients and healthcare workers. Astute observers recognize we need new concepts and tools to prevent and manage these types of injuries, which typically claim a larger portion of workers’ compensation resources than any other injury type. The 8th Annual PHTS Safe Patient Handling Conference, to be held August 5, 2010 in Columbia, is specifically designed to acquaint healthcare professionals with innovative strategies and practices that have proven effective in reducing injuries from the handling and transferring of patients. Participants will hear first-hand accounts from their peers in the field, and will see and experience hands-on demonstrations of patient handling equipment.
The objective of this conference is to:
- Motivate healthcare professionals in the roles of peer coach, program champion, and nurse leader to develop a culture of safety surrounding their patient handling programs
- Educate healthcare professionals on current solutions associated with patient handling equipment
- Educate healthcare professionals on the relationship between patient handling programs and patient safety initiatives
- Share practices from other organizations utilizing patient handling programs
Agenda items include:
- It’s All About the Data
- American Physical Therapy Association Initiatives for Safe Patient Handling
- ANA’s Role with Safe Patient Handling and Movement
