Five leading causes of injuries account for 72% of costs

Figures released by Liberty Mutual Group Inc. show the five leading causes of workplace injuries account for 72% of direct comp costs. The leading causes are:
  • Overexertion – injuries caused by lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, and carrying

  • Fall on same level

  • Fall to lower level

  • Bodily reaction – injuries from bending, climbing, reaching, and standing

  • Struck by object
Injuries that round out the top 10 causes are highway incidents, “caught in/compressed by” mishaps, struck against object, repetitive motion and assaults, adds Business Insurance, which reported the Liberty Mutual research.
